3 Month Self Defense Basics Program

TY Martial Arts is offering a 3 month program on the fundamentals of self defense and personal protection based on ideas and concepts from Jesse Glover’s Non-Classical Gung Fu.
The student can expect to achieve a basic level of skill and the tools necessary to protect themselves in a violent encounter as well as practical steps to recognizing and avoiding potential encounters.
- The program includes 13 private 1 hour classes weekly, divided over 3 months. Scheduling is flexible.
- Classes are private and can be done online or in person.
- Students will learn in a friendly, safe and relaxed environment.
- Classes are open to everyone whether they have a background in martial arts or are just starting out.
- If desired, there will be opportunities for students to train together when appropriate in order to mutually advance and test their skills.
- Students have the option of continuing their training after the program with private or group classes.
- For women interested in this program, it can be modified to address the specific scenarios and challenges that they personally face. Students are welcome to bring a spouse, partner or friend to train with them at no additional charge.
The program curriculum is split into 3 parts and is detailed below:
Month 1: Development of Weapons
The first step of functional self defence skills is the development of body weapons. A body weapon can be any kind of strike such as a hook punch. The weapons listed below are very practical and simple to learn. They will be the focus of this section.
- Slap
- Straight Punch
- Big Punch
- Back Fist / Hammer Fist / Chop
- Finger Jab
Goals / Achievements:
- Develop one or more functional weapons (KO ability)
- Increase attributes of power, conditioning, and accuracy
Month 2: Delivery System
A weapon is only useful when combined with an effective delivery system ie; a way to bring your weapons to your intended target. In this section, we will be focusing on fast and powerful footwork to deliver your weapons.
- Closing Footwork (bridging the gap)
- Closing Punch
- Chasing
- Integrating Footwork with Striking
Goals / Achievements:
- Effectively close distance and deliver your weapons in a non-telegraphic manner
- Learn to chase your opponent with strikes as they move in multiple directions
- Increase attributes of speed, explosiveness, and agility
Month 3: Counter-interference System
In this section you will learn how to deal with various barriers ie; someone blocks you. It is important to effectively remove any barrier so you can continue to deliver your weapons.
- Introduction to Sticking and Pressure
- Closing on Different Guard Positions
- Removing Barriers and Followups
- Turning Opponents (directing their weapons away from you)
- Develop basic understanding of various types of criminal assaults
- Environmental Control and Situational Awareness
Goals / Achievements:
- Develop attribute of forward pressure, and ability to respond appropriately to pressure
- Develop tactile sensitivity to sense your opponents movements
- Gain confidence in a variety of self defence situations and base level of competency in response
